Homeschool & Class Visits

Shasta Public Libraries supports homeschool families and classrooms with tailored programs and visits from librarians:

  • Library Overview: Learn how to use the library, explore resources, and enjoy a themed storytime for younger students.

  • Online Research & Skills (Grades 6–12): Instruction on using online resources and evaluating sources.

  • Booktalks: Librarian-led conversations about books for your child’s grade or theme of choice.

Tours and visits must be scheduled at least 1 month in advance. Activities may include storytime, Makerspace demonstrations, or workshops on local history and online resources.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Simple concept. Priceless rewards.

Read books to your child (ages newborn to Pre-K) and aim to complete 1,000 books before kindergarten.

What Counts:

  • Any book read to your child, in any language, by anyone

  • Books read at home, at preschool, during library storytimes, or on CD

  • Repeats of favorite books

How Long Does It Take?

  • Self-paced program: could be months or years

  • Reading one book per day completes the program in less than 3 years

Getting Started:

1. Visit any library branch (Redding, Burney, or Anderson) to sign up and receive an informational packet and first book log

2. Read books to your child and color in a book icon each time one is completed

3. Bring completed logs to the library to receive rewards and the next log

4. After completing 10 logs (1,000 books), your child gets to choose a book to keep
