We have a whole area devoted to genealogy at the Redding Library with bound volumes, online resources, periodicals, newspapers, and microfilm. With two computers devoted to genealogy and devoted volunteers to assist you with genealogy and family history research.

Members of the Shasta Genealogical Society are available to assist you with your family history questions and research. This is a drop-in session, no reservations required.

Location: Boggs/Genealogy section of the Redding Library on the 2nd floor.

Wednesdays:  1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Saturdays:       1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Call the reference desk at 245-7252, with your name, number, email, and area of genealogical research.

Old Shasta County Newspapers

We have a comprehensive collection of Shasta County's major newspapers starting from 1852 on microfilm. From that time newspapers have merged three times to bring us to the current Redding Record Searchlight.

Placing an Obituary Request

To place an obituary request and/or research request

Please send us a written letter with your request.

You must include:

  1. a self-addressed stamped envelope
  2. the name of the person or event you need us to research
  3. the date of death or the date of the event in Shasta County, California you need us to research

Due to lack of indexing, we must have an exact date. 

Photocopies of newspaper articles are 25 ¢ per page. Donations are appreciated. Please make any checks out to City of Redding.

Requests are processed by volunteers. Please allow several weeks for us to process your request as the schedule of our volunteers is unpredictable.

The local newspaper, the Record Searchlight, is indexed and available online from 3/10/1991-present. However, you must have a Shasta Public Libraries library card to access this database.
