HISTORY
The Burney Library was the first of the branches to open in Shasta County, right after the opening of the Redding Main Library in 1949. The present building was dedicated in 1969. The Friends of the Intermountain Libraries, Inc. (FOIL) was formed in 1989 in response to a funding crisis that permanently closed 10 of Shasta County’s libraries. In order to keep the doors open the Burney Friends group entered into an agreement with Shasta County to pay part of its operating expenses. Over a 17- year period FOIL raised over $150,000 for the Burney Branch. Since January 2007 Burney has been fully funded by the County, which means that the money FOIL raises can be used for materials that benefit the Burney Branch and the Shasta Public Library system as a whole. |

ACTIVITIES
FOIL supports the Burney Library by raising money in a variety of ways: books sales, bake sales, an annual Garden Tea, memberships in the Friends group, a yearly Garden Tour, a recycling program in conjunction with a local recycler, holiday raffles and other ventures designed to promote the library and encourage donations. FOIL publishes a quarterly newsletter to keep friends and supporters apprised of the Burney Library's events and activities. Through the generosity of one of its supporters, FOIL has a permanent storefront that it uses as a bookstore at Main and Tamarack in Burney. There are thousands of quality fiction and nonfiction books for adults and children. The store is staffed by volunteers and all proceeds are donated to the Burney Library. The bookstore is open spring through fall or by appointment. It is currently open friday and saturday, 10 am to 3 pm.

![]() eScrip
FOIL has been participating in the eScrip program for almost 10 years. Supporters register their grocery (Safeway, etc.) cards with the program and designate FOIL as the group they are supporting. Every time the supporter shops at the store and swipes his or her card, a percentage of their purchase is donated back to FOIL. There is no cost to the supporter. Supporters can also register their ATM and/or credit cards, and every time they use a registered card at a participating merchant, 2% to 5% of their purchase is donated back to FOIL. If you’re shopping online, go to www.escrip.com first and click on the online mall. Businesses like JC Penney, LLBean, Harry and David, Dell Computers and over 500 more will donate a percentage of your purchase to FOIL. FOIL receives over $6,000 from the eScrip program each year. eScrip is dedicated to safeguarding personal information. It will not sell, license, exchange or distribute your personal information to any third parties not directly involved with the program. These are easy, safe ways to support your local library. FOIL encourages you to visit their websites for more information. |
