The Burney Library was the first of the branches to open in Shasta County, right after the opening of the Redding Main Library in 1949. The present building was dedicated in 1969. The Friends of the Intermountain Libraries, Inc. (FOIL) was formed in 1989 in response to a funding crisis that permanently closed 10 of Shasta County’s libraries. In order to keep the doors open the Burney Friends group entered into an agreement with Shasta County to pay part of its operating expenses. Over a 17- year period FOIL raised over $150,000 for the Burney Branch. FOIL continues its fundraising to purchase new materials for the Library.
FOIL supports the Burney Library by raising money in a variety of ways: books sales, memberships in the Friends group, holiday raffles and many other ventures designed to promote the library and encourage donations. FOIL publishes a quarterly newsletter to keep friends and supporters apprised of the Burney Library's events and activities. (Call the Burney Library to add your name to the mailing list.)

Through the generosity of one of its supporters, FOIL has a permanent storefront that it uses as a bookstore at Main and Tamarack in Burney. There are thousands of quality fiction and nonfiction books for adults and children. The store is staffed by volunteers and all proceeds are donated to the Burney Library. The bookstore is open every Friday from 10 am to 2 pm or by appointment. Call the Library for more information, 530-335-4317 or check the Facebook page.
FOIL Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month at 2PM (Winter) and 3PM (Summer) in the Burney Library.
